Unboxing Mansions of Madness Second Edition. Am I going mad, or have I been here before … only without an app?
It’s been accused of fiddliness, of dodgy scenario design, of long setup times … but I really enjoyed Mansions of Madness. When it didn’t work, it was a disaster, but when it did work, it delivered some of the most memorable of gaming moments. And that much-derided fiddliness was part of its old school charm. Which is why I avoided ‘upgrading’ to the second edition, with its reliance on technology – an app no less!
But finally I’ve overcome the terror and I’m giving the new edition a try. I’m disappointed again with the truly amateurish miniatures in the box – here’s hoping FFG has cut all ties with the talentless hacks who designed these figures, which look like something you’d find in a cereal box – but all reports speak of faster gameplay and a fun, atmospheric experience. Sp let’s venture into some of those insane chateaus, those unsound palazzos, those schizophrenic stately homes, and give it a try!
