Classic movie monsters terrorize a town! Can your team stop them in time?
One of my discoveries of late last year was the game design studio Prospero Hall (now part of Funko Games) and their high quality games. This was one of the early ones: a light cooperative, fun game inspired by the classic Universal Studios monsters Dracula, Frankenstein, the Bride of Frankenstein, the Invisible Man, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, and the Wolfman.
Like all Prospero Hall games I own, this is a beautifully designed game, both visually and mechanically, perfect for families and those just getting into the hobby, or just as a light diversion for more experienced gamers. You can choose any number and combination of the monsters in your game to tweak your difficulty level, and they each have a set of simple mechanics that give them individuality. While your little party of classic movie hero types is trying to achieve those objectives, you’ll be collecting items from across the map and escorting innocent bystanders to their safe spaces, all while trying to avoid the grasp of the monsters and keep the terror level from getting out of hand!
Anything by this studio has become an instant buy for me, and I particularly enjoy their games from a graphic design point of view, as they’re some of the most attractive on the market. The visuals instantly make me feel like the team was having fun designing them, and this comes across as soon as you open the box. Little touches like having the first thing you see be a black and white text introduction like a ‘warning’ screen from an old William Castle film are delightful.
The game is pretty straightforward and hardly needs a summary, but here’s one anyway. Good luck defeating those monsters and saving the town … hold on … what’s that in the darkness behind you … LOOK OUT!
