Basic Basing Tutorial

By July 20, 2013November 17th, 2021Miniatures Games, Videos

Let’s get down to basics. It’s time for a brand new video from the Esoteric Order of Gamers YouTube channel, and today it’s a short look at basing your miniatures—texturing, painting, and using static grass. You may wish to exactly follow the instructions given here, or you might use these techniques as the basis for your own experiments—the choice is, as always, up to you.

I’ve been using this exact system for basing all my miniatures, fantasy and sci-fi alike, for some time now, and it’s brought a satisfying level of consistency to my miniatures collection.

Watch, Like, subscribe, tell your friends—all such activity is actively encouraged and most appreciated. Enjoy!

First of all, I’d like to thank you for your tutorials, it helped me a lot in my miniature paintings and the box insert of foam board. My question is: You do the basin after or before painting the miniature itself? In the video you said you use kitty litter mixed with another thing that I could’t understand, maybe my english is not that sharp…
    Thanks!

    • Hi Antony. I do the basing before I spray white primer all over the figure before painting. That way you get the extra coat of primer over the basing texture. Then I paint the figure, and then usually paint the base texture last. It’s just ground up kitty litter, nothing added, though if you’re doing a large feature base you may want to add some small rocks – it’s up to you.

Thank you. Tried this technique for the first time and am totally impressed with how it adds so much to the finished project.
