Warhammer Underworlds: Embergard

Dive into strategic battles and explore new playstyles in Warhammer Underworlds.

This new version of Warhammer Underworlds no doubt shook up a few long-term players of the game (especially since it isn’t compatible with old card decks, though these have been updated), but the simplifications, rules changes, and vastly improved rulebook have certainly made the game more accessible and entertaining for casual players like me. There’s less of an emphasis now on deck-building with individual cards, instead using a ‘Rivals’ deck system – decks that can be used with any warband and that speed things up a lot and give you quick access to different playstyles. There’s also a single board now instead of two. One simple reference sheet for your whole warband that gives you easy reference to one-shot special abilities and your inspire ability is a nice touch too. The new artwork featuring photography of posed miniatures doesn’t excite me much, but that’s a matter of taste.

Underworlds possibly never took off in the collectible way GW wanted it to, but it’s still a fun, quick game with potential for interesting tactics, and a lot of character. I for one will be playing it more often in this new edition as it’s now far more pick-up-and-play.

Making these game aids takes a lot of work, yet I provide them free of charge. If you find them useful, please consider making a donation, or becoming a regular supporter via PATREON, so I can continue making quality tabletop gaming content. Thankyou!
